Doesn’t cayenne powder burn the skin if left on for a long time?

I cut my finger very deeply near the nailed while out of country. Not being able to speak the language, I couldn’t call for help. I used powdered cayenne pepper after having applied pressure for 10 minutes without the bleeding stopping. Not much burning and it did stop the bleeding, no infection at all.
